On Saturday, December 12, at the Castro Theatre, the Silent Film Festival presents four classic movies with live musical accompaniment. This one-day, holiday presentation celebrates the scope and splendor of the silent era with four programs featuring live musical accompaniment, including the U.S. premiere of the superb restoration of Abel Gance's groundbreaking J'Accuse(1919). Stunning restoration by the Nederlands Filmmuseum and Lobster Films has the original dazzling color sequences-tinting and toning! Gance's story depicts a love triangle set against the backdrop of the Great War with actual footage from the battlefield, rapid montage, split-screen effects, and expressionistic camerawork. The day's centerpiece is Buster Keaton's Sherlock Jr-one of Time's 100 All-Time Greatest and AFI's 100 All-Time Funniest, and an inspiration for Woody Allen's The Purple Rose of Cairo. One of Keaton's most technically accomplished pictures, Sherlock Jr., contains some of the most astonishing effects ever put on film. Also featured are Chang, a spellbinding adventure from King Kong's creators; and one of the legendary Tod Browning/Lon Chaney collaborations in creepiness, West of Zanzibar. Dennis James, Robert Israel, and Donald Sosin provide live musical accompaniment. Foley artist Todd Manley will accompany Dennis James for Sherlock, Jr.
