Modernism from the National Gallery of Art
A remarkable selection of modernist art from the end of World War II through the end of the century, this exhibition brings paintings by some of the greatest masters of the postwar era to San Francisco. Featuring works by Ellsworth Kelly, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, and Frank Stella, among others, it is a captivating selection of the National Gallery of Art's collection. Included is a rare display of Barnett Newman's 15-painting masterpiece The Stations of the Cross: Lema Sabachthani (1958–1966) -- shown together as the artist intended within a discrete, chapel-like gallery devoted solely to the series.
